Government of Telangana has decided to conduct a comprehensive study to evaluate the impact of desiltation of tanks under the Mission Kakatiya project. The understanding will be developed in collaboration with the International Crop Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), which will implement the study over two years. This investigation aims to assess multiple aspects, including changes in water availability for irrigation, shifts in cropping patterns, groundwater recharge, and other significant factors.
Details of the Memorandum of Agreement
According to the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between the Telangana Government and ICRISAT, the study will explore various outcomes of de-siltation. It will cover the impact on water availability for irrigation and examine any changes in cropping patterns along with the extent of groundwater recharge.
Economic Benefits and Nutrient Management
The study also aims to assess the economic benefits derived from the application of silt as a source of plant nutrients. The research will aid in developing an integrated nutrient management strategy for major crops, considering the role of silt application. The objective is to enable better agricultural practices by enriching soil health and fertility.
Tank Silt Suitability for Agriculture
Beyond economic benefits and nutrient management, the study will evaluate the suitability of tank silt for agricultural use. This evaluation will be done based on the heavy metal and salt content in the silt. The research also intends to assess the long-term benefits of improved soil health in terms of physical, chemical, and biological attributes.
