Third Edition of Exercise Bongosagar Commences in Bangladesh

In recent news, the third edition of Exercise Bongosagar has begun. This bilateral naval exercise between India and Bangladesh commenced at Port Mongla in Bangladesh. This annual event enhances the interoperability and joint operational skills of both Indian and Bangladeshi navies through a wide range of maritime exercises and operations. Over time, this exercise has strengthened the naval ties and strategic partnership between the two countries.

About Exercise Bongosagar

Exercise Bongosagar is conducted on an annual basis. The second edition of this exercise was conducted in the Northern Bay of Bengal back in 2020. The exercise primarily focuses on developing a high degree of interoperability and enhancing joint operational skills of the participating navies. It comprises of maritime exercises and operations that ensure the continued peace, stability and security of the maritime region.

Participants in the Third Edition

The third edition of Exercise Bongosagar includes the participation of various dedicated naval ships from both countries. From India, the Indian Naval Ships (INS) Kora and Sumedha are participating in the exercise. INS Kora is a guided missile corvette while INS Sumedha is an offshore patrol vessel. The Bangladesh Navy is represented by BNS Abu Ubaidah and Ali Haider, both of which are Guided Missile Frigates.

Objective of the Exercise

The primary objective of this exercise is to strengthen mutual cooperation and enhance maritime security for both the countries. By conducting such naval exercises, both navies aim to enhance their ability to undertake joint operations and ensure the safety and security of the international maritime trade and commerce.

Other Related Exercises between the Two Countries

Apart from Exercise Bongosagar, India and Bangladesh also participate in other military exercises. SAMPRITI is a bilateral military exercise conducted periodically between the Indian and Bangladeshi armed forces. It is aimed at enhancing the level of defense cooperation and interoperability between the two countries.

Multinational exercises also feature prominent participation from both nations. Bangladesh’s military exercises like ‘Shantir Ogroshena’, TABLE TOP (Air) and IN-BN CORPAT (Navy) are some key examples.

SAMVEDNA is another multination air exercise where India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates participate. These multinational exercises provide a larger platform for these nations to collaborate and strengthen their strategic relations.

In conclusion, such military exercises bolster the diplomatic ties and enhance the strategic partnership between the countries. They collectively contribute to the peace, security and stability of the maritime region.
