Tourism Ministry Sanctions Rs 325.53 Cr for Buddhist Circuit Development

The Indian Ministry of Tourism has recently approved 5 projects worth Rs 325.53 crore for the development of the Buddhist circuit under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme. As a part of the Union government’s ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ initiative, a Buddhist Circuit Train FAM Tour was also organized, covering places of interest in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

An Overview of the Swadesh Darshan Scheme

Launched during the fiscal year of 2014-15, the Swadesh Darshan is a Central Sector Scheme aiming at the integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits in India. The scheme intends to work in synergy with other initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Skill India, Make in India, and more. It provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to State Governments and Union Territory Administrations for enhancing tourism infrastructure of recognized circuits.

The scheme’s primary objective is to develop theme-based tourist circuits based on factors like high tourist value, competitiveness, and sustainability, all culminated in an integrated manner.

Introduction to Tourism Circuits

Under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, fifteen thematic circuits have been identified for development. These include the Buddhist Circuit, Coastal Circuit, Desert Circuit, Eco Circuit, Heritage Circuit, Himalayan Circuit, Krishna Circuit, North East Circuit, Ramayana Circuit, Rural Circuit, Spiritual Circuit, Sufi Circuit, Tirthankar Circuit, Tribal Circuit, and Wildlife Circuit.

Other Initiatives Related to Tourism Development

The PRASHAD Scheme is another important initiative related to tourism development. Under this initiative, 30 projects have been undertaken for the enhancement of infrastructure.

Iconic tourist sites, including Buddhist Sites at Bodhgaya, Ajanta & Ellora, have been identified for development as part of enhancing India’s soft power.

One eminent promotional event is the Buddhist Conclave, conducted every alternate year. This conclave aims at marketing India as an attractive Buddhist Destination to major markets around the globe.

‘Dekho Apna Desh’ Initiative

Launched in 2020 by the Ministry of Tourism, the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ initiative aims to uplift the domestic tourism industry by encouraging citizens to explore more regions within the country. By extending the scale of travel within the nation, the initiative facilitates the development of domestic tourist facilities and infrastructure.

In conclusion, the recent Buddhist Circuit Train FAM Tour and the sanctioned projects under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme continue to reinforce the government’s commitment to boost domestic tourism and preserve the rich cultural heritage of India.
