Tripura Government Promotes Risa as Signature Garment Nationally

The State government of Tripura has embarked on an ambitious initiative to promote ‘risa’ at a national level as the signature garment of the region. This effort is in line with the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign run by the central government. In order to make this project successful, numerous measures have been implemented. These include providing risa uniforms to anganwadi and ASHA workers and setting up specialized training for risa-making at the Tripura Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation. The branding of risa is being carried out under the umbrella of the India Handloom Brand.

Understanding Risa

Risa is a type of handwoven cloth traditionally worn as a female upper garment. It forms an integral part of the customary attire of Tripura, which consists of three elements – risa, rignai and rituku.

About Rignai and Rituku

Rignai is primarily donned as the lower garment. Its literal meaning is ‘to wear’. It is considered to be an indigenous variant of the sari found in mainland India. On the other hand, rituku is predominantly used like a wrap, akin to the ‘chunri’ or ‘pallu’ of an Indian saree.

Versatility of Risa

Risa, owing to its versatility, is not just restricted to being a female upper garment. It can also be styled as a headgear, a stole, or given away as a symbol of respect and honour.

Cultural Significance

Risa holds a significant place in the culture of Tripura. In an event called Risa Sormani, Tripuri girls aged between 12 to 14 are first introduced to wearing a risa. Besides, males use it as a turban during weddings and important festivals. It is a common sight in all the 19 indigenous tribal communities of Tripura, each having its unique designs.

Risa and Religious Festivals

Risa also has a religious connotation associated with it. It marks its presence in various religious festivals such as Garia Puja, observed by the tribal communities.

Garia Puja Festival

Garia Puja is a significant festival in Tripura, celebrated on the last day of the month of Chaitra. It is primarily a harvest festival celebrated by the ethnic tribes like Tripuris and Reangs. One of the highlights of this festival is the Garia dance performance.
