UDAN Scheme Celebrates 4th Anniversary on UDAN Day

The Ministry of Civil Aviation recently marked the fourth anniversary of the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) Scheme with a celebratory event. Recognizing the initiative’s significant contributions to India, the government has formally recognized October 21st, the day on which the scheme was first launched, as UDAN Day.

Introduction to UDAN Scheme

Launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) serves as a regional connectivity scheme (RCS) with an objective to develop the regional aviation market. The program’s primary goal is to offer affordable, economically viable, and profitable air travel on local routes, empowering the common man to avail air travel services. The scheme focuses not only on major cities but also plans to provide connectivity to remote areas.

UDAN envisioned to bridge the gap in regional connectivity by reviving pre-existing airstrips and airports that are currently underserved or unserved. While underserved airports are defined as those without more than one flight a day, unserved airports have no operations whatsoever. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is responsible for implementing this scheme, which runs for a period of a decade.
