The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently selected Srinagar as a new member of its esteemed Creative Cities Network (UCCN). Following cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Varanasi, and Jaipur, Srinagar represents only the sixth Indian city to achieve this honour.
Snapshot: Srinagar’s Key Attributes
Srinagar secured its UCCN designation specifically for its contributions to the field of Crafts and Folk Arts. This makes it the second Indian city acknowledged in this category, trailing only Jaipur. This recognition promises not just prestige, but also tangible benefits such as international funding, opportunities for collaboration with craft universities, and an enhanced platform for marketing its craft products. Importantly, this inclusion also means that Srinagar is now one of 295 creative cities globally recognized by UNESCO.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network: Overview and Mission
The UCCN was established by UNESCO in 2004 with the aim of fostering cooperation among cities recognizing creativity as a vital component of urban development. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal 11, which focuses on establishing Sustainable Cities and Communities. The UCCN incorporates seven creative fields, namely crafts and folk arts, media arts, film, design, gastronomy, literature, and music.

Srinagar joins an illustrious group of Indian cities previously acknowledged by UCCN. These are Mumbai (Film, 2019), Hyderabad (Gastronomy, 2019), Chennai (Music, 2017), Jaipur (Crafts and Folk Arts, 2015), and Varanasi (Music, 2015).
