Union Minister Launches GEMINI Device for Fishermen’s Safety

The Honourable Union Minister of Earth Sciences has recently unveiled a state-of-the-art device called the Gagan Enabled Mariner’s Instrument for Navigation and Information (GEMINI). Specifically designed to bolster the communication and information dissemination among the fishing community, this innovation has left significant footprints in the domains of Ocean States Forecast and Potential Fishing Zones (PFZ).

Understanding the GEMINI Device

The GEMINI device stands as a revolutionary product which is projected to bring about a sea change in how information about ocean states and potential fishing zones are accessed by fishermen. The device, which works in conjunction with ISRO-satellites, provides precise data related to various oceanic activities including wind speed, ocean currents, water temperature, etc. through Ocean States Forecast system.

But that’s not all; Another exclusive feature of GEMINI is its ability to map out Potential Fishing Zones, thus providing fishermen with crucial insights about probable locations teeming with fish in the vast expanses of the ocean.

The Role of Satellite Communication in the GEMINI Device

A notable aspect of GEMINI is its far-reaching signal range. Unlike conventional cellphones, whose signals peter out at around 10-12 km from the coastline, GEMINI can send signals up to 300 nautical miles into the sea. This feature is tremendously beneficial as it enables access to vital information and alerts even in places where traditional communication modes fail.

Such enhanced satellite-based communication proves particularly useful while dealing with adverse oceanic conditions such as cyclones, high waves, and tsunamis.

GAGAN: The Backing Power Behind GEMINI

GEMINI is a product of collaborative efforts between the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The crown jewel of this collaboration is the GAGAN (GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation) satellite. Jointly developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the AAI, GAGAN is India’s pioneer satellite-based global positioning system powered by ISRO’s GSAT satellites.

A Look at the Limitations and Future Prospects of the GEMINI Device

Despite its groundbreaking features, GEMINI is not without its limitations. A significant drawback of the device is its unidirectional communication capability. This means that while it can receive signals and information, it cannot be used to make calls. Another downside is its cost. At ₹9,000 per unit, the device might prove expensive for an average fisherman. Steps are being undertaken to address this issue with proposals for a subsidy of up to 90% on the anvil.

The GEMINI device stands as a testament to the continuous efforts of organizations like INCOIS, an autonomous agency under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. With a mandate to provide best possible ocean information and advisory services, INCOIS represents a shining beacon in the realm of maritime communication and information dissemination.
