United World Wrestling Suspends India’s Wrestling Federation

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the primary governing body for wrestling in the country, has recently been provisionally suspended by United World Wrestling (UWW), the leading authority for international wrestling. The suspension is centered around the WFI’s failure to conduct its elections in the designated timeframe, a violation of the UWW’s constitutional regulations. This suspension has raised concerns for Indian wrestlers as they won’t be allowed to compete under the national flag in the forthcoming World championships in Serbia.

Why WFI was Suspended?

The UWW constitution mandates a four-year election cycle for all member federations. The WFI, however, missed its February 2023 election scheduling due to a combination of factors including allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, financial irregularities, and administrative lapses by the former WFI president and others. The suspension is aimed at protecting the wrestlers and reinstating proper federation functioning.

Other Sports Bodies in India Facing Similar Conflicts

This is not the first instance of an Indian sports federation facing suspension. FIFA previously suspended the All India Football Federation over delayed elections in 2002. Similarly, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Hockey Federation (FIH) warned of potential bans over similar organizational irregularities. In June 2020, non-compliance with the National Sports Development Code of India 2011 resulted in the Indian government revoking recognition from 54 national sports federations.

About Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)

Headquartered in New Delhi, the WFI governs wrestling in India. Recognized by the Government of India and the Indian Olympic Association, the WFI organizes various national and international wrestling events. It also supports and trains Indian wrestlers who participate in the Olympic Games.

About United World Wrestling (UWW)

The UWW, based in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland, is the international governing body for amateur wrestling. Founded as the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) in 1912, it changed its name to United World Wrestling in 2014.

A Brief History of Wrestling in India

Dating back to the 5th millennium B.C., wrestling, known in ancient times as MallaYudha, has a long history in India. Figures like Bhima from Mahabharata, and Hanuman from Ramayana were notable wrestlers. Traditionally a form of royal entertainment and fitness activity, wrestling has evolved into a professional sport.

Impact of WFI’s Suspension

The suspension affects Indian wrestlers’ ability to compete under the national flag in UWW events. Wrestlers can still participate, but under the UWW flag. The suspension also impacts the financial and technical assistance WFI receives from UWW, and tarnishes India’s reputation in the international wrestling community. It also hampers chances for qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Way Forward

WFI needs to swiftly conduct elections and seek UWW approval. A long-term plan requires restructuring the federation to address the issues plaguing it. Adopting a professional, accountable approach with checks and balances, financial audits, and grievance redressal mechanisms would go a long way. The WFI also needs to foster healthy relationships with UWW and other international bodies.
