US, Canada, Mexico Strike USMCA Trade Deal; India Hosts Water Summit

USMCA Trade Deal: A New Era in North American Trade Relations

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), established in 1994 to stimulate economic growth by eliminating trade and investment barriers between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has been replaced and renamed as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement or USMCA. This new agreement signifies a major development in the economic landscape of North America.

The Mission of USMCA

The primary objective of the USMCA is to create a high-standard trade agreement that leads to freer markets, fairer trade, and sturdy economic growth amongst the participating nations. It aims to alleviate the middle class, generate good, well-paying jobs, and pave the way for new opportunities benefiting nearly half a billion people residing in North America.

2018 India Water Impact Summit

The India Water Impact Summit, an annual event where stakeholders convene to discuss, debate, and devise model solutions for significant water-related problems in India, is taking place from December 5-7, 2018. The event is co-organized by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the Centre for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga). The focus for this year’s discussions will revolve around the rejuvenation of the Ganga River Basin.

National Mission for Clean Ganga(NMCG)

The NMCG, registered as a society in 2011 under the Societies Registration Act 1860, initially served as the implementation wing of the National Ganga River Basin Authority(NGRBA) established under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act (EPA),1986. However, the NGRBA has since dissolved in 2016 after the constitution of the National Council for Rejuvenation, Protection and Management of River Ganga, led by the Prime Minister of India.

India’s First Private Satellite

SpaceX, the US space agency, recently launched India’s first privately constructed satellite – ExseedSAT 1, in addition to other 63 satellites from 17 nations. The mini communication satellite, which weighs only a kg and is built from aluminium alloy, is owned by Mumbai-based startup Exseed Space and will serve the amateur radio communication.

Mangdechhu Project: A Revolution in Bhutan’s Power Sector

The Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project, a premier hydropower project set up on the Mangdechhu River in Trongsa Dzongkhag District of central Bhutan, boasts a robust 720MW run-of-river power plant. Built by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) with backing from the Government of India, the Mangdechhu Project is one of the components of the 10,000MW hydropower development by the year 2020 program of the Royal Government of Bhutan.
