Uttarakhand Government Implements Bio-Fencing to Reduce Man-Animal Conflict

The Uttarakhand government has recently made a progressive decision to commence bio-fencing through the cultivation of a variety of plant species in designated areas. The primary objectives behind this movement are focused on reducing conflict between humans and wildlife, deterring wild animals from venturing into populous residential zones, and shielding agricultural crops and livestock situated near the fringes of forest regions.

Plant Species for Bio-Fencing

To achieve the desired outcome, the officials have selected certain plant species including lemongrass, agave, rambans, some types of chilly, among others, that will be grown in areas frequently trespassed by wild animals, such as places near forests and within human habitats. These plant types have been carefully chosen due to their natural capabilities to deter animals without causing harm, providing an organic solution to the issue.

Past Protocols and Their Limitations

In contrast with this new initiative, the state Forest Department previously employed more traditional methods to prevent the infiltration of elephants, wild boars, tigers, leopards, amongst other creatures, into human settlements. Strategies involved included setting up solar-powered wire fences, constructing walls, and excavating pits within forested areas. However, these means proved to be less effective and environmentally friendly, and were undertaken at a considerable cost.

Comparing Costs: Traditional Fencing vs Bio-fencing

Traditional Fencing Bio-fencing
Cost High Low
Eco-friendly No Yes
Effectiveness Variable High

Bio-Fencing: A More Sustainable and Economical Solution

The introduction of bio-fencing however, supersedes these traditional methods both economically and in terms of environmental impact. This innovative approach not only aims to reduce human-animal conflict but also presents a viable source of income for farmers, through the cultivation of lemongrass, which is a valuable source of oil.

Financial Implications and Benefits

From a financial perspective, bio-fencing will significantly decrease the expenditure that the government currently bears for erecting walls, digging pits, and installing solar-powered wiring. The saved funds can be redirected towards other initiatives that may further contribute to the betterment of society and the environment.
