The state government of Rajasthan has proposed the establishment of the Wetland Ex-Situ Conservation Establishment (WESCE) in the Keoladeo National Park, popularly known as the Bharatpur bird sanctuary. The sanctuary is a World Heritage Site and is home to a diverse array of species, including over 375 species of birds. The proposed wetland zoo will feature a range of wetland species such as water buffaloes, dolphins, and crocodiles.
Purpose of WESCE
WESCE is being proposed as part of the Rajasthan Forestry and Biodiversity Development Project (RFBDP), which seeks to rejuvenate the biodiversity of the protected area. The aim of the project is to create a wetland ex-situ conservation establishment that will display a range of wetland species and educate visitors about their importance and conservation status. The proposed zoo is expected to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 15 crore and will feature a variety of animals and birds that are native to the region.
Concerns Raised
Critics of the proposed zoo are raising concerns about its impact on migratory bird habitat. They believe that the construction of the wetland zoo may have a negative impact on the sanctuary, as it is home to a large number of migratory birds that depend on the wetland habitat for their survival. The establishment of the zoo may also result in the disturbance of the ecosystem and impact the delicate balance of the wetland.
