World Environmental Health Day 2022 Observed Globally

World Environmental Health Day, recognized each year on September 26, aims to raise global awareness about the health of our environment. The underpinning philosophy is that humanity’s wellbeing is inseparably connected with the health of our environment.

The Provenance and Purpose of World Environmental Health Day

The International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) first celebrated World Environmental Health Day in 2011. IFEH is devoted to advancing and disseminating knowledge concerning environmental health protection and enhancement to improve global population wellbeing.

2022 Theme: Strengthening Environmental Health Systems for Sustainable Development Goals

This year’s focus is on fortifying environmental health systems in line with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The crucial interconnection between environment, health, and economy is increasingly recognized, warranting investment in green recovery accessible to all communities.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization launched the “Manifesto for a Healthy Recovery from COVID-19”. This initiative intends to leverage the current global momentum towards health and environmental consciousness. Environmental Health plays a crucial role in realizing SDGs, directly impacting 7 SDGs, 19 targets, and 30 indicators encompassed by the plan.

India and Environmental Health: Current Standing and Initiatives

The Environmental Performance Index 2022 ranked India at the bottom of the 180 evaluated countries, scoring a mere 18.9. Behind Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, India’s performance points to the dire need for more focused environmental initiatives.

Fortunately, several initiatives are underway. The Nagar Vana Udyan Scheme seeks to establish at least one city forest in cities with a Municipal Corporation or Class 1 Cities, aiming to cultivate healthier environments. The National Wetland Conservation Programme was initiated to conserve and utilize the country’s wetlands more effectively.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate launched the Green Skill Development Programme in June 2017, which aims to teach necessary skills for environmental conservation and protection to the youth.

On World Environment Day 2022, the Prime Minister initiated the ‘Save Soil Movement’. Focused on making the soil chemical-free, saving soil-dwelling organisms, preserving soil moisture, increasing water availability, and preventing soil erosion linked to deforestation. The country plans to restore 26 million hectares of barren land to fertility by 2030 and aspires to become Net-Zero in emissions by 2070.
