World Obesity Atlas 2023

The global obesity epidemic is worsening, with obesity rates predicted to rise significantly among children and adults in Africa, according to the World Obesity Federation’s latest report, “World Obesity Atlas 2023”.

Rising obesity rates in Africa

The report predicts a significant increase in child obesity rates in Africa, from 5% to 14% by 2035, as well as a rise in adult women’s obesity rates from 18% to 31% in the same timeframe. The report highlights that low- and lower-middle-income countries in Africa and Asia will see the highest increases in obesity rates, despite having lower levels of obesity compared to high-income countries.

Obesity rates worldwide

The report also warned that over half the world’s population could be overweight or obese by 2035, with childhood obesity predicted to more than double. The highest rates of obesity are found in the Americas, where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. Europe and Oceania follow with rates above 50%, while Africa and Asia have rates below 20%.

Impact of obesity on health

Obesity has been linked to a range of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. Obesity can also have a significant impact on mental health and well-being. According to the World Obesity Federation, the economic costs of obesity are also significant, with obesity-related illnesses costing the global economy around $2 trillion annually.

The need for urgent action

The report highlights the urgent need for coordinated action to prevent and treat obesity and support those affected. The World Obesity Federation called for governments and policymakers to take action to promote healthy diets and physical activity, as well as provide access to obesity prevention and treatment services.

The report also called for the food industry to reduce the levels of sugar, fat, and salt in processed foods and to provide healthier options. The World Obesity Federation emphasized the importance of engaging with communities and raising awareness about the risks of obesity.
