Guru Nanak Dev travelled around the world from the 15th to the 16th centuries, spreading the message of unity. He sought to break the barrier between different spiritual beliefs. Between 1500 and 1524, for 24 years, Guru Nanak travelled extensively to show the path of love, equality and selfless service to humanity. Most of his travels were on foot. Bhai Mardana accompanied him on this trip. Guru Nanak travelled everywhere thus making walking an integral part of the religion. He travelled from Haridwar to Mecca and from Mount Kailash to Sylhet. During his travels, he visited thousands of interfaith sites related to Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Jainism. Some of these places have built Gurudwara to commemorate his visit. These sites are located in nine countries which are India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, China, Tibet, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka. Some of them are in inaccessible impact zones. He performed most of his travels on foot. At that time, only animals and boats were the earliest means of transportation. Since, Guru Nanak travelled excessively on foot to spread the religion, hence, the Punjab police wants to observe World Pedestrian Day on his birthday.
Punjab Police Proposal
This proposal was submitted by the Punjab Police Department to Amrinder Raja Warring, state transport minister. This proposal seeks to commemorate Pedestrian Day on the Guru Purab of Guru Nanak. This submitted proposal also seeks to celebrate National Pedestrian Day for the first time. Then the Indian government can reach out to the United Nations to celebrate Guru Purab as World Pedestrian Day.
World Pedestrian Day, the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev, does not have a standard date in the Gregorian calendar. His birthday is celebrated on the Kartik month of the Indian lunar calendar?s full moon day. This usually falls in the month of November. In the year 2021, it is proposed to celebrate this day on November 15 (the full moon of the Kartik month according to the lunar calendar corresponds to November 15).
