World Radio Day

Every year, February 13 is observed as World Radio Day. The day is celebrated to promote radio and the engagement of people with the medium of communication.

  • The year 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of World Radio Day.
  • The theme of this year has three sub-themes- innovation, evolution, and connection.
  • In India, the day is being celebrated by All India Radio in association with Seeking Modern Applications for Real Transformation (SMART).
  • An event will be organized by these organisations on February 13 and 14 on the theme ‘New World, New Radio’.
  • The event will have various sessions. However, some of the sessions will be pre-recorded due to COVID-19.
  • The sessions will be on topics like the resilience of the radio, the challenges faced by radio during the global health crisis, and how strong it is as a medium of communication.

Background

UNESCO board recommended proclaiming a World Radio Day at its 36th session. February 13 was chosen as the World Radio Day to mark the anniversary of the day that the United Nations established the United Nations Radio in the year 1946. In December 2012, UNESCO finally endorsed the proclamation of World Radio Day. Thus, the first World Radio Day was observed in the year 2012.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people on World Radio Day and said that Radio is a fantastic medium that increases social connection.
