In recent news, the Ministry of Tourism held the 20th session of the Dekho Apna Desh Webinar series with the theme “Uttarakhand Simply Heaven”. The session was focused on highlighting the tourism potential of Uttarakhand’s two distinctive regions: Kedar Khand, also known as the Garhwal Region, and Manu Khand, or the Kumaon Region.
Highlighting the Popular Destinations
Dominating the tourist destinations in Uttarakhand are four revered pilgrim locations: Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath. These are collectively referred to as Char Dham. Badrinath sits on the banks of the River Alaknanda, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, while Kedarnath is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Hemkund Sahib: A Central Point of Sikh Pilgrimage
The region also houses Hemkund Sahib, formerly known as Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib Ji. This sacred site lies within the boundaries of Chamoli district. It is a notable place of worship within the Sikh community and serves as a pilgrimage site devoted to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru. This location is also known for its mention in Dasam Granth, a work dictated by the Guru himself.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi
Tourists can also explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi, which offer picturesque natural parks for nature enthusiasts. In addition to these, Uttarakhand is home to some of the country’s most iconic national parks, including Jim Corbett National Park, the oldest national park in the country, and Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
Uttarakhand’s Adventure Tourism Potential
Apart from pilgrimages and heritage sites, Uttarakhand offers expansive options for adventure tourism. Rishikesh and Pittoragarh are highly recommended spots for river rafting. Auli, a serene hill station, is known for its winter sports and skiing opportunities. Paragliding enthusiasts often opt for Tehri Dam situated on the river Bhagirathi and Kaushani, another serene hill station.
Innumerable Trekking Options
For adventurous tourists who prefer trekking, locations such as Chopta and Pindari Glacier provide innumerable options. These locations not only offer challenging treks but also breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscapes, making it a memorable experience.
The “Uttarakhand Simply Heaven” session was able to successfully highlight the vast array of potential that Uttarakhand holds for tourism. With activities and destinations ranging from cultural and religious visits to adrenaline-pumping adventure sports, there is something for everyone.
