34th Hunar Haat Expo Held in Gujarat

The Ministry of Minority Affairs recently held the 34th edition of Hunar Haat in Gujarat, featuring artisans from 30 states and union territories. This respected exhibition, which was first launched in 2016, is known for showcasing a variety of handicrafts and traditional products crafted by artisans from minority communities.

Understanding Hunar Haat

Hunar Haat is designed to protect and promote India’s native legacy of arts and crafts, especially in an era of intense global competition. It supports traditional artisans and craftsmen, particularly those who have inherited their craft from their ancestors and continue to carry forward this significant heritage. The recent theme for the exhibition was “Vocal for Local.”

Organizers and Objectives

The event is organized by the Ministry of Minority Affairs under the USTTAD (Upgrading the Skills & Training in Traditional Arts/Crafts for Development) scheme. The USTTAD scheme is aimed at preserving and promoting the rich heritage of traditional arts and crafts of the minority communities. Moreover, it intends to provide market exposure and employment opportunities to artisans, craftsmen, and traditional culinary experts.

The Role of Hunar Haat

Contributing much more than being just an exhibition platform, Hunar Haat has evolved into an “Empowerment Exchange” for master artisans and craftsmen. This event has been exceedingly beneficial for these skilled individuals, as large numbers of people visit and purchase indigenous handmade products. The event also offers employment opportunities to thousands of artisans and craftsmen across the country. At present, approximately 7 lakh people are directly or indirectly associated with Hunar Haat, 40% of whom are women. The organizers anticipate that in the coming years, around 17 lakh families will join the Hunar Haat community.

Other Schemes Benefiting Minorities

The Pradhanmantri Jan Vikas Karyakram is aimed at developing socio-economic assets and basic amenities such as schools, colleges, hostels, and skill development centers for minority communities. The Begum Hazrat Mahal Girls Scholarships provide financial assistance to economically backward girls from the six notified Minority communities.

The Gharib Nawaz Employment Scheme provides short-term job-oriented skill development courses to minority youth to facilitate skill-based employment.

“Seekho aur Kamao” is a placement-linked skill development scheme that aims to upgrade the skills of minority youth in various modern or traditional sectors, depending on their qualifications, current economic trends, and market potential.

“Nai Manzil” was launched in 2015 to offer formal school education and skill training to school dropouts.

The Usttad scheme dovetails with Hunar Haat’s objectives, aiming to preserve the rich heritage of traditional arts/crafts of minorities.

“Nai Roshni” is another significant initiative that focuses on the leadership development of women belonging to minority communities.
