6th India International Science Festival to be Virtual

The 6th edition of the India International Science Festival (IISF), a platform to celebrate India’s scientific and technological achievements, is due to take place virtually in 2020. This follows the success of the 5th edition held in Kolkata in 2019. The festival, since its inception in 2015, has significantly contributed to promoting Science and Technology.

About the India International Science Festival (IISF)

The IISF is a unique initiative designed to recognise the contributions of students, innovators, craftsmen, farmers, scientists, and technocrats from India and around the world to India’s scientific achievements. The primary objective of the festival is to demonstrate how science can propel India towards becoming a developed nation in a relatively short period.

The Aim of IISF

The driving purpose of the IISF is to engage the public with science and to foster an appreciation for the joy of scientific discovery. The festival aims to illustrate how disciplines such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) can provide practical solutions that significantly improve people’s lives.

Organising Agencies

The Ministry of Science & Technology and the Ministry of Earth Sciences join forces each year with Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA) to organise the IISF.

IISF 2020

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will play a key role in steering IISF 2020, with the support of all the relevant ministries and departments. It is noteworthy to mention that CSIR’s funding comes from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA) and its Origin

Vijnana Bharati, also known as the Swadeshi Science Movement, was initially established at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru by a select group of eminent scientists under the guidance of Prof. K I Vasu. Over time, this movement gathered considerable momentum and eventually evolved into an organisation with a significant national presence.

By 1991, the decision was made to expand the Swadeshi Science Movement at a national level and it was henceforth known as Vijnana Bharati. One of its key objectives is to inspire young scientists to explore their creativity and originality in their scientific pursuits. The organisation’s headquarters are located in New Delhi.
