The article begins by discussing the recent launch of the India Energy Dashboards (IED) Version 2.0 by NITI Aayog, a government think tank. This move builds on the earlier Version 1.0 released back in May 2017. The IED is designed to offer single-window access to the country’s energy data, marking a significant stride towards the creation of an extensively open and freely accessible energy data portal for India.
About India Energy Dashboards
India Energy Dashboards (IED) serves as a crucial tool for compiling energy data across the nation. The data derived from various sources, including the Central Electricity Authority, the Coal Controller’s Organisation, and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, are all integrated within this singular platform.
The IED provides a comprehensive view of data over time, ranging from the fiscal year of 2005-06 to 2019-20. It goes beyond annual statistics, offering insights at sub-yearly frequencies as well, including monthly data.
Furthermore, the dashboards include Application Programming Interface (API) linked data from government-run portals such as Saubhagya, UJALA, PRAAPTI, and Vidyut PRAVAH.
Government Supported Schemes Included in the Dashboards
From September 2017, Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana – ‘Saubhagya’ was initiated with the objective to electrify all households by December 2018. The completion of this initiative was affirmed by all states through the Saubhagya portal, excluding 18,734 households in left-wing extremist affected areas of Chhattisgarh.
UJALA, an acronym for Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All, was introduced in 2015. As a zero-subsidy initiative, it has been hailed as the world’s largest domestic lighting project. It provides LED bulbs to all domestic households with a metered connection from their respective Electricity Distribution Companies.
Launched in 2018, PRAAPTI (Payment Ratification and Analysis in Power Procurement for bringing transparency in invoicing of generators) is a web portal established by the Ministry of Power. It offers a transparent platform for power distribution companies to clear invoices and respond to claims made by generators.
Lastly, Vidyut PRAVAH is a Mobile/Web App providing real-time data on current electrical demand met, shortages, if any, surplus power available, and prices in Power Exchange.
Significance of IED
The introduction of IED Version 2.0 is not only a testament to India’s expanding digital framework but also an accessible tool for centralizing energy-related data. As a government-backed effort, it ensures that information critical to the nation’s energy production and consumption is accurately compiled, streamlined, and made available for swift access.
Moving forward, the IED is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting data-backed decisions within India’s energy sector and contributing to its overall growth. Its delivery of frequent updates enables users to track trends in energy supply and demand regularly, leading to informed decisions on policy and infrastructure development.
