Indian Scientists Develop Drug-Delivery Nanoparticles, Receives Patent

Innovations in the world of science are continually shaping our future. Recently, an exciting development has been made by scientists from four Indian institutions, including Bodoland University. This team has created Cordy Gold Nanoparticles (Cor-AuNPs) – a breakthrough that promises to revolutionize drug delivery in the human body. The efficiency and effectiveness of this novel approach have led to an international patent being granted from Germany.

Understanding Cordy Gold Nanoparticles (Cor-AuNPs)

These newly developed nanoparticles stem from a unique synthesis process that combines the extracts of Cordyceps Mlitaris and Gold Salts. Cordyceps militaris is a valuable parasitic fungus cultivated in the Department of Biotechnology’s Technology Incubation Centre (TIC) at Bodoland University. Wild Cordyceps mushrooms are indigenous to the eastern Himalayan belt. On the other hand, Gold salts are ionic chemical compounds of gold often utilized in medical applications.

The Advantage of Small Sized Drug Particles

The size of drug particles plays a crucial role in their ability to penetrate cells. The smaller the particle, the higher the penetration capability. The use of Cordyceps militaris, also referred to as the super mushroom due to its immense medicinal properties, adds bioactive components to the golden nanoparticles. This results in superior penetration and effective drug delivery.

Broader Implications of the Innovation

The biosynthesized nanogold particles indicate a new application of nanoparticles in the realm of therapeutic drug development. The nanoparticles could be infused into various drug forms such as ointments, tablets, capsules, and others. This could substantially enhance the efficacy and speed of drug delivery, making treatment processes more efficient.

UPSC Civil Services Examination Question Analysis

A relevant topic touched upon in the UPSC Civil Services Examination was the Gucchi mushroom, sometimes seen in news headlines. A question regarding these mushrooms was included in the 2022 paper, querying whether they were a type of fungus, if they grew in particular areas of the Himalayan forests, and if they were commercially cultivated in the north-eastern foot of the Himalayas. The answer to this multi-part question was that they are indeed a type of fungus and do grow in some parts of the Himalayan forests. However, they are not commercially cultivated in the mentioned area.

More on the Guchhi Mushroom

The Guchhi mushroom is a species belonging to the Morchellaceae family of the Ascomycota. They are distinguished by their pale yellow color. While they cannot be cultivated commercially, they grow naturally in the foothills of Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, and Jammu and Kashmir, thus making the correct option for the UPSC question as (c) – statement 1 and 2 are correct.

This latest development of Cordy Gold Nanoparticles and the continuous study of the various types of fungi like Cordyceps militaris and Guchhi mushroom shed light on the vast potential of these natural resources in improving medical treatments.
