Attack on Bourj Qalaouiyeh Healthcare Centre

Twelve medical staff members, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics, were killed while they were on duty at the facility. The centre forms an important part of Lebanon’s primary healthcare network and provides essential medical services to local communities. Search and rescue teams have been deployed to locate missing persons, while at least one additional health worker was reported injured.
Earlier Strike on Al Sowana Health Facility
The attack on Bourj Qalaouiyeh followed another incident earlier in the day at a healthcare facility in Al Sowana. Two paramedics were killed during that strike. These incidents highlight the increasing risks faced by health workers in conflict zones. Lebanon’s Health Ministry has condemned the attacks, stating that targeting healthcare workers and medical facilities violates international humanitarian law.
Escalation of Israel–Hezbollah Conflict
The strikes occurred during intensified hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon. Heavy fighting has been reported in areas such as Maroun al-Ras, Bint Jbeil, and Aita al-Shaab. Hezbollah’s armed wing has claimed responsibility for operations including rocket and drone attacks targeting Israeli positions. The recent escalation followed Hezbollah’s rocket launch on 2 March, which ended a period of relative calm since the ceasefire announced in November 2024.
