The Hyderabad-based International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) have collaborated to develop a groundbreaking groundnut variety called BARI Chinabadam-12 (ICGV 07219). This improved variety offers numerous advantages over its counterparts, making it a promising choice for farmers seeking higher yields and better disease resistance. With its recent approval for commercial cultivation in India, BARI Chinabadam-12 is set to revolutionize groundnut farming and cater to the growing demands of the food processing industry.

Development of BARI Chinabadam-12

The joint efforts of ICRISAT and BARI have resulted in the development of the new groundnut variety, BARI Chinabadam-12 (ICGV 07219). This variety has been specifically designed to address the challenges faced by farmers in semi-arid regions, making it an ideal choice for cultivation in India’s post-rainy season.

Disease Resistance and Early Maturation

One of the key attributes of BARI Chinabadam-12 is its resistance to foliar fungal diseases. This feature is particularly crucial for farmers looking to mitigate crop losses due to infections. Additionally, the variety matures four days earlier than its counterpart, providing farmers with a better chance to avoid adverse weather conditions and enhance harvest efficiency.

Catering to Food Processing Industries

BARI Chinabadam-12 has been developed with a focus on the needs of food processing industries. Its tan-colored kernels and desirable market traits have been well-received, making it a valuable asset for both farmers and the food processing sector. This focus on market demands ensures that farmers can cultivate a variety that is in high demand, thereby increasing their profitability.

Successful Testing and Approval

After undergoing rigorous testing in Bangladesh, BARI Chinabadam-12 has been approved for commercial cultivation. Its superior attributes, including an average on-farm yield of approximately 2.0 to 2.2 tons per hectare and a shelling outturn of 65-70 per cent, have been recognized and appreciated. This approval paves the way for Indian farmers to benefit from this innovative groundnut variety.

Expanding Cultivation Opportunities

The introduction of BARI Chinabadam-12 opens up valuable opportunities for expanding groundnut cultivation in areas that are typically submerged during the rainy season, such as ‘Char regions’ and locations adjacent to rivers with sandy-loam soil. By utilizing this variety, farmers can now make productive use of these otherwise challenging areas.

Superiority over Previous Varieties

In comparison to the popular and previous variety, BARI Chinabadam-9, the new groundnut variety, BARI Chinabadam-12, offers several superior attributes. These include improved disease resistance, early maturation, and higher on-farm yields. Farmers can expect better profitability and success with the adoption of BARI Chinabadam-12.
