Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) delivered Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mk III helicopters to the Indian Coast Guard in 2024. The delivery took place at HAL’s Helicopter Division in Bengaluru. The ALH Mk III is an indigenously developed multi-role helicopter. The Indian Coast Guard received a total of four ALH Mk III helicopters under this contract.
ALH Mk III Specifications
The ALH Mk III features a glass cockpit with modern avionics. It is powered by two Shakti engines developed by HAL and Safran. The helicopter has a maximum speed of 275 km/h and a service ceiling of 6,096 metres. It is equipped with advanced surveillance radars and electro-optical sensors.
Role and Capabilities
The ALH Mk III is designed for maritime reconnaissance and search and rescue operations. It supports coastal security and anti-smuggling missions. The helicopter can carry a crew of four and up to eight passengers or equipment. It is capable of operating from ships and shore bases.
Indigenous Development and Production
HAL developed the ALH Mk III as an upgraded version of the Dhruv helicopter series. The helicopter incorporates indigenous avionics and mission systems. HAL’s Helicopter Division in Bengaluru is responsible for production and delivery. The programme aims to enhance self-reliance in defence aviation.
Contract and Delivery Details
The Indian Coast Guard signed the contract for ALH Mk III helicopters in 2020. Deliveries commenced in 2023 and continued into 2024. The contract includes maintenance and training support from HAL. Additional orders for ALH Mk III helicopters are under consideration.
