Sakthivel Appointed AEPC Chairman Again

A Sakthivel has been appointed chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), beginning his fifth term at the helm of the apex body for India’s apparel exporters. He succeeds Sudhir Sekhri. The appointment comes at a time when the sector is seeking wider market access, stronger sustainability practices, and policy support to remain competitive in global trade.

AEPC Leadership and Role

AEPC is the key export promotion body for India’s apparel industry. It works with exporters, government agencies, and overseas buyers to expand India’s presence in international markets. As chairman, Sakthivel is expected to focus on export growth, industry coordination, and policy engagement.

Focus on Global Competitiveness

Sakthivel has said that the priority will be to strengthen India’s position in the global apparel market. Key areas include:

  • Expanding market access for Indian apparel exports.
  • Addressing sustainability and compliance challenges.
  • Reducing the impact of adverse tariff measures imposed by the United States.
  • Supporting exporters through better liquidity and cost competitiveness.

Tiruppur’s Export Growth

Sakthivel is widely associated with the rise of Tiruppur as a major knitwear hub. The city’s apparel exports grew from Rs 15 crore in 1984 to Rs 45,000 crore in 2024-25. This growth reflects the expansion of India’s knitwear manufacturing base, especially among small and medium enterprises.

Policy Engagement for MSME Exporters

In his new role, Sakthivel met the Finance Minister and sought an increase in the cap limit under the interest subvention scheme. The request aims to improve access to affordable credit for MSME exporters. Such support is important for working capital needs, export orders, and competitiveness in a challenging global market.
