India and Thailand have begun a joint in-situ air exercise involving the Indian Air Force and the Royal Thai Air Force. The exercise is aimed at improving operational coordination, air combat cooperation and interoperability between the two forces. It also reflects the growing defence partnership between the two countries, which have maintained warm and cordial relations since diplomatic ties were established in 1947.
Exercise Participation
- The Indian Air Force has deployed Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, AWACS, AEW&C platforms and IL-78 refuelling aircraft.
- The Royal Thai Air Force has fielded Gripen fighter aircraft.
- The exercise focuses on joint air operations and coordinated mission planning.
Defence Cooperation Framework
India and Thailand signed a Memorandum of About on Defence Cooperation on 25 January 2012. Since then, defence engagement has expanded through annual staff talks, subject matter expert exchanges, training exchanges, joint maritime patrolling, and trilateral or multilateral exercises. The current air exercise adds another layer to this cooperation and supports regional security ties.
Strategic Significance
- Thailand is an important maritime neighbour of India.
- Thailand’s Act West policy complements India’s Act East policy.
- The exercise strengthens defence interoperability in the Indo-Pacific region.
- It also supports wider regional synergy through military engagement.
Bilateral Context
India and Thailand share multifaceted ties covering trade, investment, connectivity, culture, tourism, education, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges. The Indian-origin community in Thailand is estimated at around 4 to 5 lakh, including more than 25,000 NRIs. This social link further supports the broader bilateral relationship.
