Yard 18003, named Krishna, is the first of three Cadet Training Ships under construction for the Indian Navy at M/s L&T, Kattupalli in Chennai. The ship was launched on 16 February 2026 in a ceremony that marked another step in India’s naval indigenous shipbuilding programme. It is designed and built in India and is scheduled for formal delivery to the Navy by the end of 2026.
Launch and Key Participants
The ship was launched by Mrs Anupama Chauhan in keeping with naval tradition. General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, was present at the event. Senior officials from the Indian Armed Forces and M/s L&T Shipbuilding also attended the ceremony.
Purpose of Cadet Training Ships
The Cadet Training Ships will be used for sea training of officer cadets after their basic shore-based training. They will also train women cadets and cadets from friendly foreign countries. The ships are intended to provide practical exposure to seamanship, navigation, and life at sea.
Indigenous Shipbuilding Push
Krishna is an example of India’s growing capability in domestic defence manufacturing. The project supports the Indian Navy’s long-term objective of reducing dependence on foreign platforms. It also aligns with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.
Strategic Significance
The launch strengthens India’s naval training infrastructure and shipbuilding ecosystem. It reflects the increasing role of Indian private industry in defence production. The project is also relevant for exam topics such as indigenisation, maritime security, and defence modernisation.
