Asteroid 2024 YR4 Rules Out Moon Impact

Asteroid 2024 YR4 is no longer considered a threat to the Moon in 2032 after new observations refined its orbit. The near-Earth object, first identified in late 2024, had briefly raised concern because early models suggested a small chance of lunar impact on 22 December 2032. Updated tracking has now shown that it will pass safely at a distance of about 21,200 km.

Updated Orbit Assessment

The latest calculations were made after astronomers gathered additional data on the asteroid’s path. The object is about 65 metres wide. Earlier estimates carried uncertainty because the asteroid was observed with limited information. As more measurements were added, the possible trajectories narrowed .

Role of James Webb Space Telescope

Scientists from NASA’s Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies used the James Webb Space Telescope to observe the asteroid in February. The object was extremely faint, making it difficult to track with most observatories. Two key observations helped improve the precision of its orbit and remove the remaining doubt about a lunar collision.

Planetary Defence and Risk Updates

The case shows how impact probabilities can change as more data becomes available. Near-Earth objects often appear risky at first because early calculations rely on limited observations. With continued monitoring, scientists can rule out threats to Earth or the Moon. In this case, earlier concern about a possible Earth impact was also dismissed for the next century.

Significance for Space Monitoring

The update marks the importance of space-based telescopes and long-term asteroid tracking. Such observations support planetary defence planning and improve forecasting of future close approaches. The latest assessment confirms that 2024 YR4 will not collide with Earth or the Moon.
