In June 2026 Jharkhand received Geographical Indication (GI) tags for four traditional products: Bhagaiya Silk, Kuchai Silk, Munda Jewellery and Jharkhand Bamboo Craft.
The four GI‑tagged products
- Bhagaiya Silk: Wild Tasar silk from the Bhagaiya belt in Godda district; linked to forest-based sericulture and local reelers.
- Kuchai Silk: Forest‑based Tasar from Seraikela‑Kharsawan; noted for natural golden sheen and tribal weaving techniques.
- Munda Jewellery: Handcrafted tribal jewellery of the Munda community; characteristic geometric motifs and ceremonial use.
- Jharkhand Bamboo Craft: Bamboo products made using bamboo from the Chhota Nagpur Plateau; includes utility and decorative artefacts by rural artisans.
Legal and institutional framework
- GI law: Governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
- Registry: GI Registry operates under DPIIT; registration valid for 10 years and renewable.
- International definition: TRIPS Article 22(1) defines GI as a sign identifying goods with a specific geographical origin and qualities or reputation attributable to that origin.
