AI Surveillance System for Elephant Safety in India

India’s innovative artificial intelligence (AI) surveillance system has advanced wildlife conservation efforts. This initiative, aimed at preventing elephant deaths on railway tracks, is particularly focused on the interstate route between Palakkad in Kerala and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Since its launch in February 2024, the system has successfully protected elephants, marking a notable achievement in reducing human-elephant conflicts.

These cameras monitor elephant movements continuously and alert train operators in real-time to prevent accidents.

Operational Success

A year after its implementation, the AI system has achieved remarkable results. There have been zero elephant fatalities on the railway tracks since the system’s launch. The project has generated over 5,000 alerts and facilitated approximately 2,500 safe elephant crossings. This success demonstrates the effectiveness of technology in wildlife conservation.

Community Involvement

Local tribal youth staff the command centre that monitors the AI cameras. This engagement not only provides job opportunities but also encourages community involvement in wildlife protection.
