Alarming Surge: 423 Dengue Cases Reported in a Single Day in the State

Despite the drop in temperatures, the state of Bihar continues to grapple with the dengue menace, as it reported a staggering 423 cases in a single day on Wednesday. This marks the highest single-day dengue count this year. Disturbingly, half of these cases were concentrated in the capital city of Patna, with 212 individuals testing positive on a single day. Over the past week, nearly 1,200 dengue cases have been registered in the state.

The state had previously reported the same number of 423 dengue cases on October 20, and 416 cases on September 30, highlighting the persistence of the issue.

Regional Breakdown

According to data shared by the health department, the regional distribution of dengue cases on Wednesday was as follows:

  • Patna: 212 cases
  • Nawada: 22 cases
  • East Champaran: 21 cases
  • Samastipur: 14 cases
  • Munger: 13 cases
  • Nalanda: 13 cases

Currently, 249 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at various government hospitals.

Contributing Factors

Dr. Rajeev Ranjan Prasad, former PMCH superintendent, explained that the state continues to witness high numbers of dengue cases due to several factors. The dense population in and around Patna, combined with favorable conditions for mosquito breeding, is a significant contributor. Ongoing construction projects, such as the Patna Metro and new Patna Medical College buildings, provide stagnant water that serves as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Even posh localities of the city are reporting dengue cases. Gardening practices, indoor plants, and air conditioner outlets have created additional breeding spots for mosquitoes in residential areas, including Patliputra Circle, Bankipore Circle, Kankarbagh Circle, and New Capital Circle.

Weather Implications

While night temperatures have dropped, daytime temperatures remain relatively high, creating favorable conditions for mosquitoes. However, health experts predict that as temperatures continue to decrease in the coming days, dengue cases are likely to decrease.

Preventive Measures

Dr. Subhash Chandra, the district vector-borne disease control officer, emphasized the importance of continuing preventive measures to control the spread of dengue. Despite the challenges, authorities and residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of dengue infection.
