Asiatic Lions

The Asiatic Lions have historically spread between western Asia and northern India. Now, their population is confined to the Gir Forest and the nearby areas within India. These lions are categorised as endangered because of small population numbers and limited area of occupancy. On May 4, 2021, eight Asiatic lions in the Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad have tested COVID-19 positive. The infection was not caused by any variant of concern.
