Batala is a town in Gurdaspur district of Majha in Punjab. The state government is considering to declare this town as the 24th district of Punjab.
Historically, Batala is considered as a key city in the northern state because of its religious, social and literary heritage. It is one of the oldest city in Punjab after Bathinda, which was founded in 1465. According to legends, Guru Nanak Dev married Mata Sulakhni in this city in 1487. The sixth Sikh Guru – Guru Hargobind – visited this city to marry his son Baba Gurditta. The city was also the home to famous Punjabi poet Shiv Kumar.
