Biotech-KISAN: Innovating Agriculture

The Biotech-Krishi Innovation Science Application Network (Biotech-KISAN) is a pivotal initiative by the Central Government aimed at revolutionizing the agricultural sector through a synergistic collaboration between scientists and farmers. Launched in 2017, this program is designed to bridge the gap between the laboratory and the field by fostering partnerships that lead to innovative solutions and advanced technologies tailored to enhance farming practices.

Objective and Scope of Biotech-KISAN

The primary objective of the Biotech-KISAN initiative is to empower farmers, especially women farmers, by making science accessible to them. By connecting science laboratories with agricultural practitioners, the scheme facilitates the direct application of cutting-edge scientific research to solve practical farming issues. The program also aims to understand and address the specific needs of the small and marginal farmers, ensuring that the benefits of scientific advancements reach the grassroots level.

Biotech-KISAN covers all agroclimatic zones and Aspirational Districts, ensuring that diverse farming conditions are considered and addressed. This inclusive approach helps in developing region-specific solutions rather than one-size-fits-all technologies. The scheme is also sensitive to the challenges faced by farmers in different parts of the country, including those in remote and rural areas.

Special Call for North East Region (NER)

Recognizing the unique agricultural challenges and the rich biodiversity of the North East Region (NER) of India, the Department of Biotechnology has issued a Special Call for this area under the Biotech-KISAN program. The aim is to increase the understanding of the local-level problems faced by NER farmers and address them through scientific interventions.

This special focus on the NER is crucial because the region’s diverse agroclimatic conditions and socio-economic factors require tailored solutions. The Special Call encourages scientists and researchers to engage with NER farmers, understand their specific issues, and develop practical and sustainable solutions that can be implemented effectively in the local context.

Establishment of Biotech-KISAN Hubs

Since its inception, the Biotech-KISAN scheme has successfully established a total of 146 Biotech-KISAN hubs across India. These hubs serve as epicenters for innovation and dissemination of farming technologies. Each hub operates by connecting a network of farmers with scientists, enabling a two-way communication channel where farmers can express their needs and scientists can provide appropriate technological solutions.

These hubs play a significant role in organizing training programs, demonstrations, and farmer-scientist interactions that lead to the adoption of new techniques and technologies.
