The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), part of the Ministry of Science and Technology, unveiled the Biotech-PRIDE (Promotion of Research and Innovation through Data Exchange) guidelines recently. Alongside this, the Indian Biological Data Centre (IBDC) also launched its website. These developments highlight India’s stride in the biosciences sector bolstering the country’s knowledge exchange and innovation.
Biotech-PRIDE Guidelines: Bridging Existing Biological Datasets
The Biotech-PRIDE Guidelines aim to integrate existing biological datasets/data centres with the IBDC, collectively dubbed the Bio-Grid. The Bio-Grid will function as a National Repository, a hub of biological knowledge, information and data. It will be tasked with facilitating data exchange, developing safety measures, setting standards for quality datasets, and formulating detailed protocols for data access. The Indian Biological Data Centre (IBDC) is designated to implement these guidelines.
India currently holds the 4th position among the top 20 countries contributing to biological databases worldwide, reflecting the nation’s active engagement in the sector.
The Necessity and Advantages of Bio-Grid
In a country like India, with a vast population exceeding 135 crores and diverse characteristics, there is a critical need for an exclusive data repository catering to Indian research needs and solutions. This indigenous datacentre can significantly simplify the process of data exchange and adoption by young scientists and researchers, for the ultimate benefit of Indian citizens.
A broader and more comprehensive collection of large-scale data will enhance our understanding of molecular and biological activities. Expected outcomes of these guidelines include progressions in human health, agriculture, animal husbandry, fundamental research and societal benefits.
The significant drop in DNA sequencing costs and advancements in technology have facilitated government agencies to fund research, generating a massive volume of biological data across various sectors of Biosciences.
Important Biotech Schemes and Policies
Several key initiatives underline India’s commitment to promoting biotechnological advancements. The Biotech-KISAN Programme, Atal Jai Anusandhan Biotech Mission – Undertaking Nationally Relevant Technology Innovation (UNaTI), the DNA Technology Bill of 2019, and the Genome India Project represent some of these pivotal schemes and policies.
The recently launched Biotech-PRIDE guidelines and the establishment of Bio-Grid is a significant step forward in solidifying India’s position as a global leader in the field of biosciences.
