BRICS Discuss Safe Work Culture, India Stresses Digitisation

The most recent BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers’ Virtual Meeting was chaired by Russia and provided a platform to discuss the establishment of a safe work culture across member countries. The topics of discussion ranged from ensuring health and welfare of workers to exploring unconventional ideas like digitisation and robotics for future labour markets.

Focus on Workers’ Health and Well-being

A key point stressed during the meeting was the vitality of health, welfare and improved working conditions for employees. The significance of occupational safety and health measures, especially amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, was underlined. It was stated that a healthy workforce would yield higher productivity and eventually contribute to economic growth.

India’s Standpoint

India asserted the need for balance between labour and employer to stimulate growth, job creation and overall labour welfare. The nation also emphasized on the potential role of digitisation and technological advancements like artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in reshaping lives and work dynamics. The shift towards a digital economy is seen as a game-changer for the world of work. India highlighted the necessity of regular studies by the BRICS Network Research Institutes to understand future work scenarios and aid policymaking.

India’s Commitment Towards No Poverty (SDG-1)

India is committed to eliminating poverty and endorsing prosperity in a changing world. The country has adopted a multi-dimensional strategy for eradicating poverty, covering most basic services and fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goal of No Poverty (SDG-1).

India’s Noteworthy Initiatives

Several initiatives were highlighted by India during the meeting. The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code Bill of 2020 prioritizes the occupational safety and health of workers. The Social Security Code Bill of 2020 extends social security coverage to previously neglected segments like migrant workers, gig, and platform workers. The Industrial Relations Code Bill of 2020 is set to resolve disputes arising out of employees’ grievances. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi provides direct income support to farmers, aiding modernisation and competitiveness. The Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan is a suite of measures to protect the economy from the adverse impacts of Covid-19.

Other Related Schemes

India also raised the relevance of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the National Livelihood Mission in safeguarding citizen interests.

The meeting concluded with an emphasis on the need for all member countries to work towards finding feasible and sustainable solutions to the issues posed by the future of the labour force in the digital economy. The aim is to ensure everyone can experience flexible employment opportunities without compromising fundamental rights.
