Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park is a UNESCO World heritage Site located in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is famous for its mountain gorillas which is a critically endangered species. About 25% of the global population of this species is found in this Park, especially at the foot of the Nyiragongo volcano. The Park stretches across 7,800 sq.km and it was created in 1925. The Park is guarded by armed rangers as it is the site of several armed conflicts over the control of oil and mineral deposits. Recently, 6 rangers were killed in the Park.
