Chandigarh’s Public Bike Sharing Initiative

Recently, the Public Bike Sharing Initiative of Chandigarh have completed it’s one month of operation. The public bicycle sharing (PBS) has gained an impressive public response.

  • The Public Bike Sharing initiative was Launched on December 10, 2020.
  • It was launched on a pilot basis by the Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL).
  • When it was launched, some 225 cycles were available at 25 docking stations. These 25 docking stations are spread across prominent locations like Rock Garden, PGIMER, High Court and Sukhna , Sectors 17, 22, 34, 35 and 43 of the Chandigarh.
  • Now, the PBS has around 11,000 regular users.
  • For the purpose of this system, an application called “Smart Bike” was also launched. More than 15,000 people have downloaded this app till now.
  • The project is being developed in 4 phases of 1,250 cycles and 155 docking stations each.
  • The entire project will be completed in 18 months.
  • It is being implemented and operated by the concessionaire M/s Smart Bike Tech Private Limited, Hyderabad. It will monitor the project for 10 years on public private partnership (PPP) basis.

Features of the bike

The bike has the features of pedal assisted e-bikes, charging facility at the docking stations. The bikes are also provided with GPS-enabled locking arrangement. It will be monitored by a Command-and-Control Centre which will work 24x7 to help the users.

How this system works?

  • Under the PBS, the residents can rent cycles to commute through the city.
  • The bike is available at a rental amount of ?5- ?10 for half an hour.
  • Residents have also been given the choice of annual membership with one-time payment.

Success of the system

Under the PSB, people have travelled more than 35,000 km on the cycles provided by PSB. Thus, till date, they have contributed in saving 11,617 tonnes in CO2 emissions.

How this system is successful?

The system comprises of a well-thought-out location as docking stations, well maintained quality of cycles, city-wide network of cycle tracks, night lighting on the tracks and higher awareness levels among the residents have made this system a success in the city.

Next Phase of PSB

The next phase of the Public Bike Sharing system will start in May 2021. In this phase, 1,250 cycles will be added. Further, the number of dockets also be increased from 25 to 155. This phase will also launch the docking stations near people’s houses near the milk booths. There have been plans of providing 5,000 bicycles in the city along with the network of 617 docking Stations so as to provide last mile connectivity to the users.
