Where is Chauri Chaura?

Chauri Chaura is a town located near the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The town is the site of the historical Chauri Chaura incident.

What is Chauri Chaura Incident?

  • Chauri Chaura incident took place on February 4, 1922, at Chauri Chaura town during the Non-Cooperation Movement.
  • On this day, a large group of protestors from the movement clashed with the police which opened fire against them.
  • As a result, some protestors attacked the police station and set it on fire.
  • 22 policemen and 3 civilians died in the incident.
  • Because of this violence, Mahatma Gandhi also halted the non-cooperation movement on February 12, 1922.
  • Non-cooperation Movement was started by Gandhiji on September 4, 1920, for obtaining Purna Swaraj (full independence) and self-governance.

Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebrations

The centenary celebrations of Chauri Chaura will be inaugurated by PM on February 4, 2021. He will also release a postal stamp on the Chauri Chaura incident Centenary. Families of freedom fighters and martyrs will also join the event. The celebrations will begin on February 4 and will carry on for a year.
