Climate Change Threatens Major Banana Producers, Study Reveals

The recent study published in Nature Climate Change points to a potential reduction in banana crop yields due to climate change. Notably, ten significant banana producers, including India, the world’s largest producer and consumer of this fruit, are expected to be affected. The study also highlighted that 27 countries, which collectively contribute to 86% of global banana production, have witnessed an increase in crop yield since 1961 thanks to climate alterations creating favourable growing conditions. However, India is experiencing a negative impact from these changes.

The Ideal Conditions for Banana Cultivation

Bananas, being tropical crops, flourish under specific conditions. The ideal temperature range for banana growth extends from 15ºC to 35ºC. Rainfall within 650 to 750 mm on average is preferred, and regional variation ranges from humid tropics to dry mild subtropics. Deep, rich loamy soil is most conducive to their cultivation.

Concerns about Disease and Climate Change

Global researchers have expressed deep concern about the effect of diseases like Fusarium Wilt on banana crops. However, the impacts of climate change on crop production have been largely side-lined. Such a neglect can be detrimental, considering the current climate trends. As such, immediate investment into preparing tropical agriculture for future climate change is crucial.
