The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) is a committed international organization seeking the sustainable development of the Amazon Basin. However, reaching a consensus on how best to protect the vast area remains a challenge. Meanwhile, the Indian government continues working towards improving conditions for its pensioners and transforming public procurement. Also, India is experiencing a rise in conjunctivitis cases. This article will delve into these topics.
Colombia’s Proposal at the Amazon Summit
At the Amazon Summit organized by ACTO, Colombia put forward an ambitious proposal: Preserve 80% of the Amazon from deforestation and degradation by 2025. However, this initiative did not garner full support from all members. Scientists have long cautioned that if the collective deforestation and degradation surpasses a 20-25% limit, the forest might hit an irreversible tipping point, leading to a complete ecosystem dieback.
The Belem Declaration and Indigenous Participation
The Belem Declaration, issued during the Amazon Summit, acknowledges the critical role of Indigenous knowledge for biodiversity conservation. It suggests inclusive participation of Indigenous Peoples in decision-making and policy formulation processes, which can help protect the ecosystem.
Jeevan Pramaan: Easing Pensioners’ Life
In contrast to the Amazon issue, the Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) in India has introduced Digital Life Certificates (DLC), known as Jeevan Pramaan. The DLCs enhance the ease of living for Central Government pensioners. Initially submitted via biometric methods, DLCs can now be generated using Face Authentication technology linked with Aadhaar database. The process is streamlined and cost-effective, reducing pensioners’ dependence on external biometric devices.
Government e-Marketplace (GeM): A Revolution in India’s Public Procurement
Celebrating its 7th Foundation Day, Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has transformed India’s procurement landscape. Launched by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2016, it facilitates buying of goods and services for government departments and organizations. The platform has saved over ₹45,000 crore since its inception, surpassing other renowned public procurement platforms like South Korea’s KONEPS and Singapore’s GeBIZ.
Monsoon and Conjunctivitis: A Rising Concern
With the arrival of monsoon, there has been a surge in India in cases of conjunctivitis, also known as “Pink Eye”. The rainy season creates a conducive environment for this infectious disease, which is characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, causing redness, itching, discharge, and pain. It is propagated through direct contact with contaminated hands or surfaces. Prevention measures include frequent handwashing, refraining from touching or rubbing eyes, not sharing personal items, wearing sunglasses, and staying away from infected individuals.
