The National Medical Commission (NMC) of India has recently updated its logo, replacing the previous design with an image of Dhanvantri, a figure from Hindu mythology revered as the god of Ayurveda. The change has sparked controversy amongst the medical community, leading to various reactions and debates around its implications.
New Logo and the Controversy
The new logo has been met with resistance from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), among others, who argue that the symbol might promote a specific religion or ideology, thereby potentially excluding parts of the population with different beliefs. The fresh design replaces the word ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’, and notably, it omits the national emblem.
The revised logo, according to critics, may not convey the secular and democratic principles that Indian institutions uphold. Furthermore, there is concern that it contradicts the scientific foundations of modern medicine by promoting Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine still yet to be entirely validated by scientific evidence.
The Iconography of Dhanvantri
Dhanvantri is an iconic character within Hindu culture, deeply associated with health and medicine. He embodies healing, welfare, and health restoration – values central to the workings of any medical institution. Traditional depictions of Dhanvantri show him bearing four hands, holding medicinal herbs, and a sacred pot.
Understanding the National Medical Commission (NMC)
Established in 2020 by the National Medical Commission Act of 2019, the NMC replaced the previous regulatory body, the Medical Council of India (MCI). It serves as the paramount body overlooking medical education and practice within India, comprising multiple autonomous boards that handle different aspects of medical administration.
The NMC includes the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board, the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board, and the Ethics and Medical Registration Board. A Medical Advisory Council also operates under the NMC, offering guidance on matters related to medical education and practice.
The Role of NMC in India’s Medical Education and Practice
The NMC is entrusted with conducting and overseeing significant screening tests essential for medical education like NEET-UG, NEET-PG, and FMGE. It also sets the standards for medical education and training, regulates the registration and ethics of medical practitioners, and assesses and rates medical institutions across the country.
Global Recognition of NMC
In addition to its national duties, the NMC also holds global recognition through the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The validation from WFME, established in 1972 by international institutions including the World Medical Association and the World Health Organization, means that medical degrees conferred by the NMC are globally recognized. Such recognition underscores the critical role of the NMC in shaping India’s medical landscape and its influence worldwide.
