The international community is set to hear from Delhi’s Chief Minister at the ‘Daring Cities 2020’ conference on October 7th. He is among five urban leaders from across the globe slated to speak at this virtual event aimed at empowering those who have the power to shift our cities towards more sustainable trajectories.
About Daring Cities
Daring Cities serves as a virtual, action-oriented forum that highlights and encourages city leaders to challenge the status quo and strive for sustainable alternatives. The audience for this event includes decision-makers, mayors, technical staff, researchers, private sector representatives, and community organizers. This platform aims to galvanize local initiatives to tackle the climate emergency and promote ambitious resilience-building and climate change mitigation efforts.
This forum is an initiative of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, and the Federal City of Bonn, Germany. It draws upon the experiences and networks established during the Resilient Cities Congresses, which were convened annually from 2010 to 2019 by the same organizers. ICLEI is a global network consisting of over 1,750 local and regional governments dedicated to sustainable urban development. Several municipal corporations and councils from India, such as Pune Municipal Corporation, Nainital Municipal Council, and North Delhi Municipal Corporation, are proud members of this network.
The Daring Cities 2020 Event
Daring Cities 2020 is scheduled to be a three-week event, starting on October 7th and concluding on October 28th. The event will feature high-level and visionary speakers, engaging workshops, and personal networking opportunities in various virtual formats. These diverse formats will accommodate different topics, time zones, internet bandwidth limits, and languages.
This event is set to pave the way for COP26, Daring Cities 2021, and subsequent related events. The 26th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is slated for 2021 in Glasgow, UK.
India’s Role in Daring Cities 2020
The Chief Minister of Delhi has been invited to speak alongside urban leaders from Bogota (Colombia), São Paulo (Brazil), Los Angeles (USA), and Entebbe (Uganda). The discussion will focus on multilevel action required to tackle the climate emergency and enhance environmental sustainability.
The Chief Minister of Delhi is expected to address how Delhi has responded to the existing climate emergency and air pollution crisis. His presentation will feature innovative solutions such as the Pusa decomposer and the first-of-its-kind Electric Vehicles (EV) policy in India. These initiatives have been instrumental in combating air pollution issues in the metropolitan area.
The hopeful anticipation of Daring Cities 2020 extends far beyond its speakers, though. This event signifies a worldwide focus on strategic and unified approaches to fostering sustainable urban development and combatting climate change, all while empowering local leaders to be pioneers of this vital global mission.
