Desulfovibrio diazotrophicus

Desulfovibrio diazotrophicus is a new species of bacterium found in the nitrogen-rich human gut. It belongs to a family of bacteria known as sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that are capable of surviving and growing on sulfur-containing compounds. They are capable of nitrogen fixation – the ability to convert nitrogen into biologically useful form. This finding is significant because SRBs are usually found in environment where there is very little bioavailable nitrogen.
