DPIIT’s quality control and safety standards for household electrical appliances

DPIIT’s quality control and safety standards for household electrical appliances

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in India has proposed the implementation of compulsory quality control and safety standards for various household electrical appliances. This initiative aims to curb the import of sub-standard products, particularly from countries like China, and promote domestic manufacturing. The targeted products include vacuum cleaners, electrical shavers, massage appliances, electric steam cookers, electric heating tools, electric coffee makers, and electric food processors.

Ensuring Safety and Quality Standards:

Under the draft order, the proposed standards will apply to all electrical appliances intended for household, commercial, or similar applications with a rated voltage not exceeding 250V single-phase AC or 415V three-phase AC. The DPIIT aims to cover as many as 85 standards in one quality control order to ensure the safety of these electrical appliances. Once the order is rolled out, the production, sale/trade, import, and stocking of these items will require the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark, certifying their compliance with the prescribed standards. This move will not only promote domestic manufacturing but also address safety concerns associated with these products.

Importance of Quality Control and Safety:

The introduction of mandatory quality control and safety standards for household electrical appliances is crucial for multiple reasons. Firstly, it will help reduce the import of sub-standard products, particularly from countries like China. By setting specific standards, India aims to protect consumers from potential hazards and unreliable products. Secondly, this initiative will boost the domestic manufacturing sector. It encourages the production of high-quality electrical appliances within the country, leading to economic growth and job creation. Moreover, ensuring safety and quality in household appliances enhances consumer trust and confidence, promoting a favorable business environment.

The Role of DPIIT:

The DPIIT plays a pivotal role in the development and promotion of the industrial sector in India. As a part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the department is responsible for implementing initiatives that foster industrial growth aligned with socio-economic goals. By introducing compulsory quality control and safety standards for household electrical appliances, the DPIIT aims to create a favorable ecosystem for domestic manufacturing. This initiative supports the government’s vision of making India self-reliant and reducing dependency on imports.

Promoting High-Quality Manufacturing:

The DPIIT’s efforts to promote high-quality manufacturing in India extend beyond the introduction of safety standards. The department is actively working to encourage the production of high-quality products within the country. By focusing on sectors such as vacuum cleaners, electrical shavers, massage appliances, and others, the DPIIT aims to reduce imports and encourage domestic manufacturing. This initiative not only benefits consumers by ensuring reliable and safe products but also boosts the overall growth of the industrial sector.
