The draft State Energy Efficiency Action Plan for Kerala, prepared by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with support from the Energy Management Centre, Kerala, emphasizes the importance of electric vehicles and green buildings in achieving energy efficiency and emission reduction goals.
Electric Vehicles for Energy Savings
The draft plan suggests that Kerala can achieve significant energy savings by increasing the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Under a “moderate scenario,” this could result in savings of 0.56 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE) and a reduction of 1.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2) in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. In an “ambitious scenario,” the savings could be 0.84 MTOE and 2.6 MtCO2, respectively. To achieve these targets, the plan recommends increasing the share of electric vehicles in the total vehicle stock, adding charging stations, and promoting solar-powered EV charging infrastructure to meet the increased electricity demand.
Green Buildings for Energy Efficiency
The draft plan also emphasizes the importance of green buildings in achieving energy efficiency goals. Increased penetration of green buildings by 2030 could save Kerala 0.43 MTOE annually in energy savings and reduce GHG emissions by 1.3 MtCO2. Promoting energy-efficient buildings can reduce energy consumption and decrease the state’s dependence on fossil fuels.
Focus on Four Key Sectors
The draft plan primarily focuses on four sectors to achieve energy savings and efficiency: transport, industry, domestic and commercial buildings, and agriculture and fisheries. It aims to address the state’s growing energy consumption and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
For households, the plan suggests promoting energy-efficient appliances, lighting, and building materials through the Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s (BEE) standard and labeling program.
For industries, an “Identify, Implement, and Verify” (IIV) scheme is recommended to enhance energy efficiency in high-tension and extra-high tension industries.
In the agriculture and fisheries sector, transitioning to solar power pumps and replacing inefficient pumps with BEE star-rated pumps with smart control panels can result in significant energy savings.
Submission to State and Union Government
The draft action plan has been submitted to the State government and will soon be submitted to the Union government, according to Energy Management Centre (EMC) officials.
The plan outlines a comprehensive strategy to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and promote sustainable practices in Kerala, contributing to a more environmentally friendly and energy-conscious future for the state.
