FSSAI Enhances Food Safety Regulations for E-commerce

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is intensifying its oversight of food safety in e-commerce. This move comes as India anticipates a surge in tourist activity during the peak season. The FSSAI is urging state authorities to enhance surveillance at e-commerce warehouses and to implement standard operating procedures (SoPs) for delivery personnel. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of food products reaching consumers.

Increases in Surveillance Efforts

FSSAI has directed state food safety commissioners to boost inspections in e-commerce warehouses. Increased scrutiny is essential to prevent unsafe food from entering the market. The focus is particularly on areas with high tourist traffic, where food safety is critical.

Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs)

The FSSAI is advocating for the establishment of SoPs for e-commerce food delivery. These guidelines will govern the handling and transportation of food products. Proper implementation of SoPs is expected to minimise risks associated with food safety during delivery.

Utilisation of Mobile Food Safety Labs

To enhance food safety at tourist hotspots, FSSAI recommends deploying mobile food safety labs. These labs, known as ‘Food Safety on Wheels’, will enable real-time testing and monitoring of food products. This initiative aims to ensure that food served to tourists meets safety standards.

Training for Food Business Operators (FBOs)

FSSAI emphasises the importance of training food handlers across various sectors. The goal is to train 2.5 million food handlers by March 2026. This training will cover hygiene practices and food safety regulations, ensuring that all food service personnel are well-informed.

Integrated Food Safety Approach

An integrated approach to food safety is being encouraged. FSSAI is calling for collaboration among ministries, stakeholders, and local authorities. Regular advisory meetings at state and district levels are essential for maintaining high food safety standards.

Consumer Engagement and Awareness

FSSAI is promoting consumer involvement in food safety. Initiatives such as fairs, walkathons, and street plays will help raise awareness. The aim is to encourage a culture of healthy eating among the public as part of the Eat Right India movement.
