G20 Summit 2023: World Leaders Receive Handcrafted Indian Gifts

The recent G20 Summit held in Delhi, India has provided a unique opportunity for leaders across the globe to immerse themselves in the rich traditions and cultural diversity of India. A carefully selected assortment of handcrafted gifts showcased different facets of the country’s cultural and artisanal heritage.

Descriptions of Gifts Presented to the Leaders

All gift items were exquisitely packaged in a Sandook, an ornate chest lovingly crafted from Sheesham (Indian rosewood). The vessel itself was a piece of art, boasting intricate brass detailing that exemplified the attention to detail and artistic prowess that went into creating it. The wood used is renowned for its durability and distinctive grain pattern.

Sensory Treats for Taste and Aroma

Leaders were treated to a sensory experience with several aromatic and culinary delights. They received a pack of Saffron from Jammu and Kashmir, a spice known for its distinct taste and multiple health benefits. Also included were Pekoe Darjeeling and Nilgiri Tea, two coveted teas from India’s tea tapestry, each offering a unique taste reflective of their cultivation regions.

Rare Beverage: Araku Coffee

A package of Araku coffee, the world’s first terroir-mapped coffee, grown organically in Andhra Pradesh’s lush Araku Valley, was part of the exquisite collection. Hand-cultivated by farmers on small plantations, this coffee is free from machine intervention or chemical usage.

The Special Honey from the Sundarbans

Adding a sweet touch was a pot of traditional honey harvested in the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest located at the Bay of Bengal. This honey, rich in flavonoids, is 100% natural and possesses significant health benefits.

A Perfume for the Senses

Leaders were introduced to the ancient Indian tradition of perfume crafting with the inclusion of Zighrana Ittar from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, adding a sensory dimension to the gifts.

Handcrafted Excellence: Shawls and Khadi Scarves

The gift chests held an exquisite Pashmina shawl from Kashmir, made from the wool of the Changthangi goat found at high altitudes. Additionally, each leader was personally presented a Khadi scarf during their visit to Rajghat, symbolizing sustainable fashion and India’s independence movement.

Stamps and Coins Commemorating India’s G20 Presidency

As part of the inauguration of Bharat Mandapam in July 2023, Prime Minister of India released special commemorative coins and stamps. Drawing inspiration from India’s G20 logo and the ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ theme, one of the postage stamps took inspiration from the lotus, India’s national flower, depicted in gold color.
