Government Launches Jeevan Kaushal, Lays Foundation for IIS Mumbai

The Government’s recent launch of the Curriculum for Life Skills (Jeevan Kaushal) programme has been met with interest and enthusiasm. This initiative, sparked by the University Grants Commission (UGC), aims to incorporate Emotional Intelligence, Intellectual Competencies, and verbal and non-verbal communication skills into its framework.

Understanding The Jeevan Kaushal Program

The newly designed Jeevan Kaushal program targets undergraduates countrywide with an 8 credits point system that can be easily accommodated into any semester of their course journey. The curriculum includes four distinguished courses, namely Communication skills, Professional and Leadership skills, Problem-solving and Decision-making, and lastly, Universal human values.

Indian Institute of Skills, Mumbai– Pioneering Skills Development

In a bid to transform India into the Skill Capital of the World, the Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has laid the cornerstone of the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) at Mumbai. IIS is geared towards offering skill training to students yearning for technical education post-Class X and XII, cultivating a generation of employable, industry-ready professionals. The Mumbai IIS has been established through a partnership with the Tata Education Development Trust (TEDT).

The Parameters of the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS)

The Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) aligns with the Institutes of Eminence (IoEs) following the model of IITs and IIMs. The IIS aims to enroll approximately 5,000 students annually, with a campus placement rate for 70% of trainees.

Forming Public-Private Partnerships to Propel Education

The Union Cabinet has approved the foundation of Indian Institute of Skills (IISs) in three strategic locations in the country: Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Kanpur. These educational facilities will be built and functioned under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model on a not-for-profit basis.

This initiative will fortify learning and training via robust industry connect in both public and private sectors, thereby promoting notable programs like Make in India, Skill India while catering to the demands of Industry 4.0.
