Balwant Moreshwar Purandare, more commonly known as Babasaheb Purandare, was born on July 29th, 1922 in Maharashtra. From a young age, he took a keen interest in the life and achievements of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, launching him onto a path of authorship and historical research. As a result of his devoted study and depiction of Shivaji’s life, Purandare came to be recognized as ‘Shiv Shahir,’ or ‘Shivaji’s poet’.

Purandare’s first significant contribution was “Thinagya”, an elucidated book about Shivaji, which roughly translates to “Sparks on Shivaji”. His other noteworthy works include “Raja Shiva Chatrapati” and “Kesari”, along with “Narayanrao Peshwa”. These books, brimming with intricate details and enlightening anecdotes about the lives of their subjects, have become seminal texts for students of history.
One of Babasaheb Purandare’s most celebrated creations is the drama “Jaanta Raja”. Since its debut in 1985, it has been enacted in five different languages, demonstrating its wide acceptance and popularity. The play was originally mapped out in Marathi. Purandare’s creative prowess in this work was recognized with the prestigious Kalidas Samman from the Government of Madhya Pradesh in the years 2007-08.

Purandare’s lifelong dedication to history, and his distinctive narrative style, earned him numerous accolades. In 2015, he was honored with the Maharashtra Bhushan Award, the highest civilian award in the state of Maharashtra. This symbolized recognition from his home state for his pivotal role in illuminating the life of one of Maharashtra’s most cherished historical figures.
His contribution was also recognized at a national level when, in 2019, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. As India’s second-highest civilian award, this emblemized the country’s acknowledgement of his valuable contribution to Indian historical literature.
