Government Launches ‘Toycathon 2021’ for Innovative Toy Design

The Government of India has launched an innovative program known as the ‘Toycathon 2021’. This virtual toy hackathon is a combined effort of several government departments including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Textile, Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and All India Council for Technical Education.

Objective of Toycathon 2021

The main aim of this initiative is to conceptualize toys that are not only fun but also carry the essence of Indian value system. By instilling good values and positive behaviour in children through play, the government hopes to expand their understanding of Indian cultural ethos. The program was also launched to promote India as a global hub for toy manufacturing, following the principles of the Atmanirbhar Abhiyan.

Features of the Initiative

The hackathon is designed around Indian culture and ethos; local folklore and heroes; and Indian value systems. It includes nine themes, one of which is rediscovering traditional Indian toys and incorporating them into modern play. The event encourages participation from students, teachers, start-ups, and toy experts. Winners stand a chance to receive prizes worth up to Rs. 50 lakhs.

Significance of the Program

Toycathon 2021 has multifarious significance. Firstly, it aligns with the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’, a program initiated by the Prime Minister in 2015 to strengthen the unity and integrity of India through enhanced understanding and bonding among states.

Secondly, it aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, promoting the use of educational toys to facilitate better learning.

Thirdly, the initiative will engender an ecosystem favourable for the domestic toy industry and local manufacturers, thus tapping into their untapped resources and employing their potential optimally.

Lastly, it is hoped that this initiative helps in reducing toy imports. Even though the Indian toy market is valued at one billion dollars, 80% of the toys are imported.

‘Toycathon 2021’ not only aims to boost the domestic toy industry but also seeks to impart Indian values in children through creative play thereby promoting a better and brighter future.
